About Markdown Document
Common Use Cases
- Extracting notebook content for blog posts
- Converting analysis notebooks to documentation
- Version-controlling notebook content as Markdown
Jupyter notebooks are excellent for interactive analysis, but the .ipynb JSON format is difficult to diff, review, or publish outside of Jupyter. Converting to Markdown extracts the narrative text and code blocks into a clean .md file you can edit in any text editor, version-control in Git, or publish as a blog post.
Jupyter notebooks are structured JSON with code execution state, while Markdown is a lightweight text format. Converting strips the execution machinery and preserves the readable content.
Why Convert Notebook to Markdown?
Publish notebook content as blog posts
Many technical blogs and documentation sites accept Markdown. Converting your notebook gives you a ready-to-publish draft with code blocks and explanatory text.
Version-control with clean diffs
Notebook JSON diffs are unreadable. Markdown diffs show exactly what text and code changed, making code review and collaboration practical.
Edit without Jupyter
Once in Markdown, your content is editable in VS Code, Obsidian, or any text editor. No Python or Jupyter environment required.
Lightweight content extraction
If you only need the text and code from a notebook (not the outputs), Markdown gives you a clean, lightweight version of the content.
When to use each
Keep as .ipynb when...
- Interactive execution is needed
- Outputs and visualizations matter
- The notebook is still being developed
- Cell-by-cell execution order is important
- The compute environment is required
Convert to Markdown when...
- Publishing as a blog post or article
- Version-controlling the narrative content
- Editing in a lightweight text editor
- Integrating into a documentation site
- Creating a readable, diffable copy

How to use
- Upload your Jupyter notebook. Drag and drop an .ipynb file, or click to browse. Files up to 500 MB are supported.
- Convert to Markdown. Click Convert File. The notebook is parsed and Markdown cells are preserved as-is, while code cells become fenced code blocks.
- Download your Markdown file. Save the .md file for your blog, documentation, or repository. Files are deleted within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Are code cell outputs included?
- Typically, only code cells and Markdown cells are included. Cell outputs (plots, tables, printed text) may be omitted depending on the conversion path.
- Will Markdown cells be preserved exactly?
- Yes. Markdown cells in the notebook are included as-is in the output file.
- Can I use the Markdown with a static site generator?
- Yes. The output is standard Markdown compatible with Hugo, Jekyll, Docusaurus, and other static site generators.
- What about notebook metadata?
- Notebook metadata (kernel info, language version) is stripped. Only the content cells are included in the Markdown output.
- Is this free?
- Yes. Free users get a daily conversion allowance. Registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
