About Portable Document Format
Common Use Cases
- Creating printable reports from Jupyter notebooks
- Submitting notebook-based assignments as PDF
- Distributing analysis results in a portable format
Jupyter notebooks are the working format of data science, but when it is time to submit an assignment, send a report to a client, or archive analysis results, PDF is the expected format. Converting your .ipynb to PDF produces a paginated document with Markdown text, code cells, and outputs ready for printing or distribution.
Jupyter notebooks are interactive, code-executable documents, while PDF is a fixed-layout format for reading and printing. Converting captures the current state of your analysis in a universally shareable form.
Why Convert Notebook to PDF?
Submit assignments and reports
Academic courses, client deliverables, and internal reports typically require PDF submission. Converting your notebook gives you the expected format.
Print-ready analysis documents
The PDF output is paginated with proper margins, making it suitable for printing reference copies of your analysis.
Share without Jupyter dependencies
Recipients do not need Python, Jupyter, or any data science tools. PDF opens in every browser and PDF reader.
Archive reproducible snapshots
A PDF captures the exact state of your notebook at conversion time, including all cell outputs, providing a permanent record of your analysis.
When to use each
Keep as .ipynb when...
- The analysis is still in progress
- Cells need to be re-executed
- Collaborators run the notebook themselves
- Interactive exploration is the goal
- The compute environment matters
Convert to PDF when...
- Submitting a final report or assignment
- Sending results to a client
- Printing a hard copy
- Archiving a finished analysis
- Attaching to an email or ticket

- Download your PDF. Save the PDF for submission, printing, or sharing. Files are deleted within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Will code outputs and plots be included?
- Yes. Static outputs (text, tables, PNG/SVG plots) are included in the PDF. Interactive widgets will not render in the static PDF.
- Can I hide code cells and show only output?
- The converter includes all cells. To hide code, remove code cells or use notebook metadata tags before converting.
- What about large notebooks?
- Large notebooks with many cells and outputs will produce correspondingly long PDFs. There is no page limit on the output.
- Are LaTeX equations rendered?
- LaTeX math in Markdown cells is rendered where the conversion pipeline supports it. Simple equations typically render correctly.
- Is this free?
- Yes. Free users get a daily allowance. Registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
