About Markdown Document
Common Use Cases
- Converting formatted documents to Markdown for documentation
- Moving RTF content into a text-based writing workflow
- Extracting formatted content for Git repositories
RTF files carry basic formatting, but the format is outdated and does not integrate into modern documentation, blogging, or version-control workflows. Converting to Markdown gives you the same content in a lightweight, widely-supported format that works everywhere from GitHub to static site generators.
RTF stores formatting with proprietary control codes, while Markdown uses human-readable syntax (# for headings, ** for bold). Both are text-based, but Markdown is designed for modern writing workflows.
Why Convert RTF to Markdown?
Modernize legacy formatted content
RTF is a legacy format. Markdown is the modern standard for technical writing, documentation, and content that lives in Git repositories.
Clean, readable source
Markdown syntax is designed to be readable as plain text. The converted file looks good in any text editor, not just when rendered.
Publish to docs sites and blogs
Markdown is the native format for Hugo, Jekyll, Docusaurus, Ghost, and most content platforms. Converting from RTF gets your content into the expected format.
Version-control with clean diffs
Markdown files produce readable, meaningful diffs in Git, making it easy to track changes and collaborate on content.

Frequently asked questions
- Will bold and italic be preserved?
- Yes. Bold text becomes **bold** and italic text becomes *italic* in the Markdown output.
- What about headings?
- If the RTF file uses heading-level formatting, those are mapped to Markdown heading syntax (# through ######).
- Are tables converted?
- Simple tables are converted to Markdown table syntax. Complex tables with merged cells may be simplified.
- What formatting is lost?
- Text color, custom fonts, text alignment, and other visual-only formatting have no Markdown equivalent and are dropped.
- Can I use the output with a static site generator?
- Yes. The output is standard Markdown compatible with Hugo, Jekyll, Docusaurus, and other generators.

- Yes. The maximum file size is 500 MB per file.
