About Wavefront OBJ
Common Use Cases
- Editing web 3D models in desktop editors
- Extracting meshes from GLB for sculpting
- Converting web assets for offline workflows
GLB is optimized for web delivery, but desktop 3D editors often work better with OBJ. Converting GLB to OBJ gives you a clean, editable mesh that opens in virtually every 3D application ever made.
GLB is a compact binary for web renderers. OBJ is an open text format focused on geometry and materials that every desktop 3D tool reads natively.
Why Convert GLB to OBJ?
Edit in any 3D application
OBJ is supported by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Rhino, SketchUp, and hundreds more. If it does 3D, it reads OBJ.
Sculpt and modify web models
Pull models from web experiences and edit them in ZBrush, Mudbox, or Blender sculpt mode. OBJ imports cleanly into sculpting workflows.
Human-readable text format
OBJ is plain text, so you can inspect vertices, faces, and material assignments in any text editor for debugging or scripted processing.
Clean archival format
OBJ has been stable since the 1990s with no versioning or compatibility issues. It is a safe choice for long-term mesh archival.
When to use each
Use GLB when...

- Fast binary loading in WebGL
- AR experiences on mobile
- Self-contained web assets
- Embedding in Three.js scenes
Use OBJ when...
- Editing in desktop 3D editors
- You need a human-readable text format
- Sculpting and detailed mesh work
- Sharing with tools that prefer OBJ
- Long-term mesh archival

How to use
- Upload your GLB file. Drag and drop a .glb file onto the upload area, or click to browse. Files up to 500 MB are supported.
- Run the conversion. Click Convert File. Geometry and materials are extracted from the GLB and written as OBJ with a companion .mtl file.
- Download your OBJ. Save the .obj file and open it in any 3D editor. Files are deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Are PBR materials converted?
- glTF PBR materials are mapped to OBJ Phong equivalents in the .mtl file. Base color becomes diffuse, and metallic-roughness is approximated. Results are close but may need manual tweaking.
- Are textures extracted?
- Yes. Textures embedded in the GLB are extracted as separate image files and referenced by the .mtl.
- Are animations preserved?
- No. OBJ is a static mesh format and does not support animations. Only the default pose geometry is exported.
- Is converting GLB to OBJ free?
- Yes. Free with no signup. Anonymous users get a daily allowance, registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
- What is the file size limit?
- The maximum file size is 500 MB per conversion.
