About Wavefront OBJ
Common Use Cases
- Exporting FBX models for tools that prefer OBJ
- Stripping Autodesk-specific data for clean meshes
- Sharing 3D models in a universally supported format
FBX is tightly integrated with Autodesk tools and game engines, but not every application reads it well. OBJ is the most widely supported 3D format in existence. Converting FBX to OBJ gives you a clean mesh with materials that opens reliably in any software.
FBX is a rich binary format with animations, rigs, and Autodesk-specific features. OBJ is a simple text format focused on geometry and materials that every 3D tool can read.
Why Convert FBX to OBJ?
Open in any 3D software
OBJ is supported by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Substance Painter, SketchUp, Rhino, and hundreds of other tools. If a program works with 3D, it reads OBJ.
Clean geometry without proprietary data
OBJ strips away FBX-specific animation tracks, bone hierarchies, and custom properties, leaving you with just the mesh, normals, UVs, and material assignments.
Human-readable text format
OBJ is plain text, so you can open it in any text editor to inspect vertices, faces, and material references. This makes debugging geometry issues straightforward.
Lightweight for archival and sharing
Without animation data and proprietary metadata, OBJ files are often smaller and simpler to share than their FBX counterparts.
When to use each
Use FBX when...
- You need animations and skeletal rigs
- Working in an Autodesk pipeline
- Importing into Unity or Unreal
- Exchanging rigged characters between artists
- The project requires blend shapes
Use OBJ when...
- You only need static geometry and materials
- Sharing with tools that do not read FBX well
- Opening in ZBrush, Substance, or Rhino
- Archiving clean mesh data
- You want a simple, inspectable text format

How to use
- Upload your FBX file. Drag and drop a .fbx file onto the upload area, or click to browse. Files up to 500 MB are supported.
- Run the conversion. Click Convert File. Geometry and materials are extracted from the FBX and written as OBJ with an accompanying .mtl material file.
- Download your OBJ. Save the .obj file and open it in any 3D editor. Files are deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Are animations preserved?
- No. OBJ is a static mesh format. Animations, skeletal rigs, and blend shapes from the FBX are discarded. If you need animations, consider GLB or FBX instead.
- What happens to materials?
- Materials are exported to a companion .mtl file referenced by the OBJ. Basic properties like diffuse color and texture paths are preserved.
- Does it handle large FBX scenes?
- Yes. Multi-object FBX scenes are converted with each object as a named group in the OBJ. Files up to 500 MB are supported.
- Is converting FBX to OBJ free?
- Yes. Free with no signup. Anonymous users get a daily allowance, registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
- What is the file size limit?
- The maximum file size is 500 MB per conversion.
