About MPEG Audio Layer III
Common Use Cases
- Making APE files playable on any device
- Creating portable versions of lossless APE archives
- Sharing APE music in a universal format
APE (Monkey's Audio) is a lossless format that achieves good compression ratios, but almost nothing plays it outside of foobar2000 and a few Chinese audio apps. MP3 is the universal audio format, supported by every device, player, and platform ever made. Converting APE to MP3 gives you files that play absolutely everywhere, from old car stereos to modern smartphones.
APE stores lossless audio with strong compression, while MP3 uses lossy compression that discards audio data for dramatically smaller files. APE preserves every sample; MP3 throws away what your ears are unlikely to miss.
Why Convert APE to MP3?
Universal playback
MP3 plays on every device ever made that plays audio. Phones, car stereos, old iPods, smart speakers, game consoles, web browsers, everything. APE plays on almost nothing.
Dramatically smaller files
A 30 MB APE track becomes roughly 5-7 MB as MP3 at 192 kbps, or 8-10 MB at 320 kbps. That is practical for phones, email, and cloud storage.
Best possible MP3 from lossless source
Encoding MP3 from a lossless APE source produces the cleanest possible lossy output. No generational loss from a previous lossy encoding.
Share-friendly format
Everyone can play an MP3. Nobody needs to install special software. For sharing music, MP3 is still the format with the least friction.

Frequently asked questions
- Does converting APE to MP3 lose quality?
- Yes. MP3 is lossy, so audio data is discarded. At 320 kbps, the difference from the lossless APE source is negligible on consumer equipment. Keep your APE files as masters.
- What about CUE sheets?
- If your APE came with a .cue file, the conversion produces one MP3 for the full album. Split the APE into individual tracks first using foobar2000 or a CUE splitter.
- What is Monkey's Audio?
- Monkey's Audio (APE) is a lossless audio compression format. It achieves slightly better compression than FLAC but has much narrower device and software support.
- Why not convert to FLAC instead?
- If you want to keep lossless quality, APE to FLAC is the better choice. APE to MP3 makes sense when you need small files for portable devices, sharing, or platforms that require MP3.
- Is converting APE to MP3 free?
- Yes. Anyone can convert for free with no signup. Anonymous users have a daily cap, registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
- Will metadata transfer?
- Yes. FFmpeg reads APE metadata tags (APEv2) and maps them to MP3 ID3 tags. Standard fields like title, artist, album, and track number are preserved.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes. The maximum upload size is 500 MB.
