About MPEG Audio Layer III
Common Use Cases
- Reducing storage space of high-quality audio
- Creating portable versions of lossless audio
- Sharing music with universal compatibility
FLAC is the gold standard for archiving and listening at full quality. It is lossless, so every sample from the original CD rip or studio master is preserved exactly. The catch is size: a single album in FLAC can run 300 to 500 MB, which quickly becomes a problem on phones, small SD cards, and slow network connections. Converting to MP3 trades a slice of audio fidelity for files roughly one fifth the size, which is almost always the right move for everyday listening.
FLAC keeps every bit of the original audio exactly, while MP3 discards roughly 80 to 90 percent of the data to produce files that are small, portable, and still sound great on typical headphones and speakers.
Why Convert FLAC to MP3?
Fit your library on a phone or SD card
A FLAC album can be 400 MB or more. The MP3 version of the same album is typically 40 to 80 MB depending on bitrate. That is the difference between squeezing 30 albums onto a phone and squeezing 300. For commuters, runners, and anyone living out of cloud syncs, that is a huge practical win.
Works on devices that do not support FLAC
FLAC support has improved a lot, but plenty of car stereos, older Bluetooth speakers, budget MP3 players, fitness watches, and web upload forms still do not understand it. MP3 plays on everything. Converting is often the only way to get your FLAC library onto the gear you actually use.
Faster uploads and streaming
Uploading a FLAC album to cloud storage or a podcast host takes five to ten times longer than uploading the MP3 version. On slow or capped connections, that difference is the difference between finishing in a minute and finishing in an hour.
ID3 tags and cover art travel cleanly
FLAC uses Vorbis comments, while MP3 uses ID3 tags. Our converter translates the common fields (title, artist, album, track number, year, genre) and carries embedded cover art across so your tracks stay properly organized in any music player.
When to use each
Keep FLAC when...

- Feeding tracks into audio editors or DJ tools
- Preserving surround sound or high resolution masters
- Burning audio CDs or mastering workflows
Convert to MP3 when...
- Loading music onto a phone with limited storage
- Playing through car stereos, earbuds, or speakers
- Uploading to podcast hosts or cloud music services
- Sharing albums over email, chat, or slow networks
- Filling a budget MP3 player or fitness watch

How to use
- Upload your FLAC file. Drag and drop a FLAC file onto the upload area above, or click to browse your computer. Uploads are capped at 500 MB per file, which handles most single tracks and short albums. For very large hi-res masters you may need to process individual songs separately.
- Start the conversion. Click the Convert File button. Your FLAC is decoded and re-encoded on our servers using FFmpeg with the LAME MP3 encoder, the industry standard combination for high quality MP3 output.
- Download your MP3. Once encoding finishes, a download link appears. Save the MP3 to your computer, phone, or cloud drive. Your FLAC upload and the converted MP3 are both automatically deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Is converting FLAC to MP3 free?
- Yes. Anyone can convert FLAC to MP3 for free with no signup. Anonymous users get a daily conversion allowance, free registered FileFactory accounts get a higher cap, and Premium or Lifetime members enjoy unlimited conversions.
- How much smaller will my MP3 be compared to the FLAC?
- Expect roughly a 4x to 8x reduction. A 40 MB FLAC song typically compresses to a 5 to 10 MB MP3. A full 400 MB FLAC album usually lands between 50 and 80 MB as MP3 depending on the bitrate.
- Will I hear the difference between the FLAC and the MP3?
- Most listeners on phones, laptop speakers, earbuds, and car stereos genuinely cannot tell the difference. On high end headphones or studio monitors, careful listeners may notice subtle differences in cymbals, reverb tails, and very high frequencies. For casual listening MP3 is more than enough.
- Do my tags and cover art get carried over?
- Yes. Our converter translates FLAC Vorbis comments (title, artist, album, track number, year, genre) into MP3 ID3 tags and preserves embedded cover art. Your tracks should look identical in your music player after conversion.
- What happens to hi-res FLAC files (24-bit, 96 kHz)?
- MP3 as a format only supports up to 16-bit 48 kHz, so any hi-res FLAC is down sampled and dithered during conversion. The audible result still sounds great but the extended bit depth and sample rate are not preserved in the MP3.
- What about multichannel FLAC, like 5.1 surround?
- MP3 does not reliably support surround sound across decoders, so any multichannel FLAC is downmixed to stereo during conversion. If you need to keep surround, convert to a format like AAC or keep the FLAC original.
- How long are my files kept on your servers?
- Both the uploaded FLAC and the converted MP3 are automatically deleted within 1 hour. All transfers are encrypted and we never share your files with third parties.
