About MPEG Audio Layer III
Common Use Cases
- Extracting soundtracks or dialogue from MKV video
- Saving music from concert or music video MKVs
- Creating portable audio from large video collections
MKV (Matroska) is a popular container for high-quality video, often holding multiple audio tracks, subtitle streams, and chapter markers. When all you need is the audio, keeping the entire MKV around is overkill. Extracting to MP3 gives you a small, universally compatible audio file you can play on any device.
An MKV with HD video can easily be several gigabytes. The extracted MP3 audio is typically under 10 MB per hour of content, because the entire video track is discarded.
Why Convert MKV to MP3?
Massive space savings
MKV files are often 1 to 8 GB for a single video. The audio alone, exported as MP3, is usually a few megabytes. You free up enormous amounts of storage.
Play anywhere without a video player
Not every device handles MKV natively, but every device on earth plays MP3. Extract the audio and skip the compatibility headaches entirely.
Select the right audio track
MKV files frequently contain multiple audio streams (different languages, commentary tracks). FFmpeg extracts the primary audio track by default, giving you the main soundtrack.
Perfect for offline listening
Turn video content into audio you can enjoy while commuting, exercising, or doing other tasks where watching a screen is not practical.

How to use
- Upload your MKV file. Drag and drop your MKV onto the upload area, or click to browse. Uploads are limited to 500 MB per file.
- Extract the audio. Click Convert File and FFmpeg strips the video, subtitles, and chapters, encoding the primary audio track as MP3.
- Download your MP3. A download link appears when processing finishes. Save the MP3 to your device or add it to your music library. Files are auto-deleted within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Will the extraction lose quality?
- If the MKV already contains MP3 audio, FFmpeg copies it directly with no quality loss. For other audio codecs (AAC, FLAC, AC3), transcoding to MP3 adds one generation of lossy compression, which is inaudible at standard bitrates.
- What if my MKV has multiple audio tracks?
- FFmpeg extracts the default (first) audio track. If you need a different track, you may need to specify it manually in a local FFmpeg command.
- How large will the MP3 be?
- At 192 kbps, one hour of audio is roughly 86 MB. Most extracted tracks are far smaller than the source MKV, which can be several gigabytes.
- Is MKV to MP3 conversion free?
- Yes. Anonymous visitors get a free daily cap, registered users get a higher limit, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes, 500 MB per upload. For very large MKV files, consider trimming them first.
