About Portable Document Format
Common Use Cases
- Converting open-source documents to universal format
- Sharing OpenOffice documents universally
- Archiving open-format documents
ODT is the native document format for LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and most open-source word processors. It is a great format for writing, but a poor one for sharing, because the person on the other end may not have an ODT-compatible editor installed. Converting to PDF gives you a locked, pixel-perfect copy that opens on literally every device.
ODT is an open, editable document format, while PDF is a fixed-layout format designed for distribution, so exporting from ODT to PDF is the cleanest possible conversion in the document world.
Why Convert ODT to PDF?
Share with people who do not use LibreOffice
Most of the world uses Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Apple Pages, and not all of them open ODT gracefully. PDF sidesteps the whole problem by producing a file that any browser, phone, or e-reader can display without additional software.
Lock the layout in place
ODT documents can reflow slightly between LibreOffice versions or when opened in a different editor. PDF freezes fonts, spacing, images, and page breaks so the document you send is byte-for-byte the document your reader sees.
Submit to portals that require PDF
Job applications, grant submissions, academic journals, and legal filings almost always require PDF. Converting from ODT up front means your document is accepted on the first upload rather than bounced for being in the wrong format.
Archive in a long-term friendly format
PDF is supported by every operating system and is a stable archival target (PDF/A is an ISO standard specifically for long-term preservation). Exporting a final PDF copy of your ODT source is cheap insurance against future software churn.

Frequently asked questions
- Is converting ODT to PDF free?
- Yes. ODT to PDF is free to use with no signup required. Free users get a daily conversion allowance, registered FileFactory accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members enjoy unlimited conversions.
- Will my formatting be preserved exactly?
- Yes, in almost every case. Because we convert with LibreOffice (the same engine that created your ODT), the PDF output matches what you see in Writer. Headings, tables, images, footnotes, and page breaks all carry over faithfully.
- What happens to custom fonts?
- If a custom font is embedded in the ODT, LibreOffice will use it during export and the PDF will render with the same typeface. If the font is not embedded and not available on our conversion servers, LibreOffice will substitute the closest available font, which can shift line lengths slightly.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes. The maximum upload size for a single conversion is 500 MB, which is large enough for even long, image-heavy ODT documents.
- Can I convert ODS spreadsheets or ODP presentations with this tool?
- This converter is for ODT text documents. We offer separate tools for other document and presentation formats, so pick the one that matches your source file for the cleanest result.
- How long are my files kept on your servers?
- Uploaded ODT files and converted PDF output are automatically deleted within 1 hour. We never share files with third parties and every transfer uses encrypted connections.
- Do I need LibreOffice installed to use this tool?
- No. The conversion runs entirely on our servers. You just upload the ODT, wait a moment, and download the PDF. LibreOffice never needs to be installed on your computer.
