Common Use Cases
- Reading FictionBook titles on Kindle, Kobo, and other e-readers
- Migrating Russian and Eastern European ebook libraries
- Opening FB2 files in apps that only support EPUB
FictionBook (FB2) is an XML-based ebook format that became the dominant standard in Russia and Eastern Europe. Millions of titles exist in FB2, from classic literature to modern fiction. The problem is that FB2 support outside of Russian-made apps is limited. Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, and most international reading apps expect EPUB. Converting FB2 to EPUB opens your library to every e-reader on the market.
FB2 is an XML-based format popular in Russia and Eastern Europe with limited international reader support, while EPUB is the global standard accepted by virtually every e-reader, reading app, and digital bookstore worldwide.
Why Convert FB2 to EPUB?
Read on any e-reader worldwide
EPUB is supported by Kindle (via Send to Kindle), Kobo, Nook, Apple Books, Google Play Books, and every major reading app. FB2 support is limited to a handful of specialized readers, mostly in Russian-speaking markets.
Migrate entire FB2 libraries
If you built an ebook collection from Russian digital libraries (Flibusta, Lib.rus.ec, Litres), converting to EPUB lets you read those books on mainstream hardware without sideloading specialized apps.
Better typography and layout
EPUB supports more advanced CSS styling, embedded fonts, and responsive layout than FB2. Many readers render EPUB with better typography, hyphenation, and page margins than they do with raw FB2 files.
Share books with non-Russian readers
If you want to share a translated or multilingual FB2 title with someone outside the Russian-speaking world, EPUB is the format they can open without installing unfamiliar software.
