About Dolby Digital (AC-3)
Common Use Cases
- Converting DTS tracks for devices that only support Dolby Digital
- Making surround audio compatible with older AV receivers
- Preparing multi-channel audio for streaming platforms
DTS and Dolby Digital (AC3) are the two dominant surround sound formats in home theater. Both support 5.1 channel audio, but their device compatibility differs. Many budget AV receivers, soundbars, streaming boxes, and smart TVs support Dolby Digital but lack a DTS decoder. If your audio track is in DTS and your hardware only speaks Dolby, you get silence instead of surround sound. Converting from DTS to AC3 solves this by re-encoding the same multi-channel audio in the more universally supported Dolby Digital format.
DTS typically uses higher bitrates (768 to 1,509 kbps) for its surround encoding, while Dolby Digital AC3 operates at lower bitrates (384 to 640 kbps) and is supported by a wider range of consumer hardware, including virtually all soundbars and streaming devices.
Why Convert DTS to AC3?
Broader hardware compatibility
Dolby Digital is supported by virtually every AV receiver, soundbar, streaming stick, smart TV, and gaming console. DTS support is common on mid-range and high-end equipment but missing from many budget devices. AC3 is the safe choice for universal surround playback.
Preserve the 5.1 surround mix
The conversion maintains your 5.1 channel layout (front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right, and LFE subwoofer). All six channels are individually preserved in the AC3 output.
Fix silent audio on streaming devices
If a video file plays with no audio on a Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, or Apple TV, the cause is often a DTS audio track that the device cannot decode. Converting to AC3 restores audio without re-encoding the video.
Compatible with all major media servers
Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby can passthrough Dolby Digital to virtually any client device. DTS passthrough is more limited, often falling back to stereo transcoding. Using AC3 ensures your surround mix reaches the speakers intact.
When to use each
Use DTS when...
- Your receiver supports DTS decoding
- You want the highest possible surround bitrate
- Playing on a high-end home theater setup
- The source is a Blu-ray with DTS-HD Master Audio
- Bitrate is no concern and you want maximum fidelity
Use AC3 when...
- Your device or receiver only supports Dolby Digital
- Streaming over a network with limited bandwidth
- Playing on a soundbar, streaming stick, or smart TV
- You need a universally compatible surround track
- Muxing audio into a video file for broad playback

- Convert to AC3. Click Convert File. The DTS multi-channel audio is decoded and re-encoded as Dolby Digital AC3, preserving the 5.1 channel layout and surround positioning.
- Download your AC3 file. Save the converted AC3 and mux it into your video file, or play it directly. Uploaded files are automatically deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Will the surround channels be preserved?
- Yes. All channels (front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right, and LFE) are individually encoded in the AC3 output. The spatial surround mix is preserved.
- Is there a quality difference between DTS and AC3?
- DTS uses higher bitrates, so it has a theoretical quality advantage. In practice, the difference is inaudible on consumer equipment. Blind listening tests consistently show that most people cannot reliably distinguish between DTS and Dolby Digital at standard bitrates.
- Can I convert DTS-HD Master Audio?
- DTS-HD Master Audio contains a lossless core that may be too complex for this converter. Standard DTS (the lossy core) is fully supported. If your file is DTS-HD, the converter will process the DTS core layer.
- Why does my streaming device not play DTS?
- Many streaming devices (Roku, Fire TV Stick, Chromecast) include a Dolby Digital decoder but omit DTS to save on licensing costs. Converting to AC3 is the standard workaround for this limitation.
- Is DTS to AC3 conversion free?
- Yes. Anyone can convert for free with no signup required. Anonymous users get a daily conversion allowance, registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
