Common Use Cases
- Preparing COLLADA models for 3D printing
- Converting SketchUp exports for slicer software
- Turning game assets into printable meshes
DAE (COLLADA) is an XML-based 3D interchange format used by SketchUp, Google Earth, Blender, and several game engines. STL is the universal input for 3D printers and slicer software. Converting DAE to STL strips materials, animations, and scene data, leaving clean triangle geometry ready for Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, and any other slicer.
DAE is a rich scene format with materials, animations, physics, and effects stored in XML. STL contains only triangle mesh geometry, which is exactly what 3D printers need.
Why Convert DAE to STL?
Print SketchUp models
SketchUp exports to DAE natively. Convert to STL and your architectural models, furniture designs, and props are ready for 3D printing.
Works with every slicer
Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Simplify3D, and every other slicer accepts STL. No plugins or special importers needed.
Clean geometry for manufacturing
STL strips everything except triangles, producing a clean mesh that slicer software can process without parsing materials or animations.
Convert game assets to physical objects
Game engines that export COLLADA give you DAE files. Convert to STL to turn game characters, weapons, and props into physical 3D prints.
When to use each
Use DAE when...
- Exchanging scenes with materials and animations
- SketchUp and Google Earth exports
- XML-based 3D data exchange
- Game engine asset interchange
- Scenes with cameras, lights, physics
Use STL when...
- Sending models to a 3D printer
- Slicer software requires triangle mesh input
- Pure geometry for manufacturing
- Prototyping and physical fabrication
- Universal 3D printing format

How to use
- Upload your DAE file. Drag and drop a .dae file onto the upload area, or click to browse. Files up to 500 MB are supported.
- Start the conversion. Click Convert File. COLLADA geometry is extracted and written as a clean STL triangle mesh.
- Download your STL. Save the .stl file and open it in your slicer or 3D printing software. Files are deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it work with SketchUp DAE exports?
- Yes. SketchUp exports COLLADA (DAE) natively, and the converter handles SketchUp geometry correctly.
- Are materials preserved?
- No. STL stores only geometry. Materials, colors, and textures from the DAE file are stripped during conversion.
- Does it handle animations?
- Animations are stripped since STL is a static geometry format. Only the mesh geometry is preserved.
- Is the output watertight?
- If the original DAE mesh is watertight, the STL output will be too. Non-manifold models may need repair in your slicer.
- Can I print the output directly?
- Yes, if the source geometry is solid and closed. Open the STL in your slicer, configure print settings, and send to the printer.
- Is converting DAE to STL free?
- Yes. Free with no signup. Anonymous users get a daily allowance, registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
- What is the file size limit?
- The maximum file size is 500 MB per conversion.
