How to use
- Paste your text. Any UTF-8 input.
- Pick output format. Hex, base64, or base64url.
Common use cases
- Content addressing
- Blockchain hashes
- Modern checksums
Frequently asked questions
- Why is SHA-256 the default modern hash choice?
- It is part of the SHA-2 family standardized by NIST (FIPS 180-4), widely audited, fast on modern hardware, and has no known cryptographic weaknesses. It is used by TLS, Bitcoin, Git object IDs (in the SHA-256 mode), and content-addressed storage.
- How long is a SHA-256 digest?
- SHA-256 produces a 256-bit hash, shown as 64 hexadecimal characters (or 44 in Base64).
- Can SHA-256 be used for password hashing?
- Not directly. SHA-256 is too fast for password hashing on its own. Use a memory-hard KDF (bcrypt, scrypt, Argon2id) that internally uses SHA-256 or a similar primitive plus a salt and many iterations.
- Does this generator run locally?
- Yes. SHA-256 is computed in the browser using the Web Crypto API (subtle.digest), with no network round-trip.
