How to use
- Paste your Base64. Standard or URL-safe, either works.
- Copy the decoded text. UTF-8 output.
Common use cases
- Inspecting Base64 payloads
- Debugging API responses
- Extracting data URIs
Frequently asked questions
- What does this Base64 decoder accept?
- Standard RFC 4648 Base64 with + and /, URL-safe Base64 with - and _, and inputs missing the trailing = padding. The decoder normalizes all of these and returns the original UTF-8 text.
- Why does decoding sometimes produce garbage characters?
- That usually means the original input was binary (an image, archive, or other non-text file) rather than UTF-8 text. Binary Base64 should be decoded into a file, not displayed as a string.
- Can I decode a data URI?
- Yes. Strip the leading data:mime/type;base64, prefix and paste only the Base64 portion. The decoder returns the original text bytes (or you can use the Base64 File Converter to recover the file).
- Is the Base64 I paste sent to a server?
- No. Decoding runs in your browser using atob plus a UTF-8 TextDecoder, so sensitive payloads stay on your machine.
