About Waveform Audio File Format
Common Use Cases
- Extracting uncompressed audio for editing in a DAW
- Sourcing clean audio from video for music production
- Creating lossless audio masters from video recordings
When you need to work with audio from a video in a professional context, compressed formats like MP3 introduce artifacts that compound with each edit and re-export. WAV gives you uncompressed PCM audio: the raw waveform with no compression artifacts, no generational loss, and full compatibility with every DAW and audio editor on the market.
WAV is uncompressed audio, so the file size is much larger than MP3 or AAC, but there is zero compression loss. One minute of stereo WAV at 44.1 kHz is roughly 10 MB, compared to about 1.5 MB for MP3 at 192 kbps.
Why Convert MP4 to WAV?
Zero compression artifacts
WAV stores raw PCM audio with no lossy compression. Every sample is preserved exactly as decoded from the source, giving you the cleanest possible starting point for editing.
Universal DAW compatibility
Every DAW (Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, FL Studio, Reaper, Audacity) imports WAV natively. It is the lingua franca of professional audio production.
No generational loss on re-export
When you edit and export WAV, there is no additional compression step. You can process, mix, and bounce the audio repeatedly without quality degradation.
Ideal for sample creation
If you are sampling audio from a video to use in music production, starting from WAV ensures the sample is as clean as the source allows before you apply your own processing.

How to use
- Upload your MP4 file. Drag and drop your MP4 onto the upload area, or click to browse. Uploads are limited to 500 MB per file.
- Extract uncompressed audio. Click Convert File and FFmpeg decodes the audio from the MP4 and writes it as uncompressed PCM in a WAV container. The video track is discarded.
- Download your WAV file. A download link appears when extraction finishes. Import the WAV into your DAW, audio editor, or sample library. Files are auto-deleted within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the WAV output truly lossless?
- The extraction itself is lossless: FFmpeg decodes the MP4 audio and writes it as uncompressed PCM without any additional compression. If the source audio was AAC (lossy), the WAV faithfully represents that AAC audio without adding any further loss.
- Why is the WAV file so much larger than the MP4?
- WAV stores uncompressed audio, which takes significantly more space than compressed formats. The MP4 audio was compressed (usually as AAC), and uncompressing it to WAV expands it to its full PCM size.
- Should I use WAV or FLAC for audio editing?
- Both are lossless. WAV is the safer choice for DAW compatibility since every audio editor supports it natively. FLAC is about half the file size but some older DAWs may not import it directly.
- Is MP4 to WAV conversion free?
- Yes. Anonymous visitors get a free daily cap, registered users get a higher limit, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes, 500 MB per upload. Note that the output WAV file may be larger than the input MP4, since uncompressed audio takes more space than the compressed audio inside the MP4.
