About MPEG-4 Part 14
Common Use Cases
- Converting legacy DivX movie rips to a modern format
- Playing old AVI DivX files on phones and smart TVs
- Upgrading video archives from the CD-rip era
DivX was a revolutionary video codec in the early 2000s that made it possible to compress a full DVD movie onto a single CD. Millions of video files were encoded with DivX and distributed in AVI containers. While DivX served its purpose admirably, the format has been superseded by H.264 in MP4 containers, which offer better compression, better quality, and near-universal device support. Converting your DivX files to MP4 brings them into the modern era.
DivX uses MPEG-4 Part 2 compression (typically in an AVI container) from the early 2000s, while modern MP4 uses H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) which delivers roughly twice the compression efficiency at the same visual quality.
Why Convert DivX to MP4?
Play on every modern device
Most phones, tablets, and smart TVs cannot play DivX-encoded AVI files. MP4 with H.264 is natively supported by every device made in the last decade, so you get instant, reliable playback without codec packs or special apps.
Smaller files with better quality
H.264 is roughly twice as efficient as the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec used by DivX. A 700 MB DivX file (the classic "one CD" size) can often be re-encoded to 400 to 500 MB as MP4 with equal or better visual quality.
Proper container format
DivX files typically use the AVI container, which lacks support for modern features like variable frame rates, chapter markers, and proper subtitle streams. MP4 handles all of these cleanly.
Stream to media servers
Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, and other media servers handle MP4 files far better than DivX AVI. Converting means smoother streaming, faster seeking, and correct metadata detection across your home network.
When to use each
Use DivX when...
- Playing on a standalone DivX-certified player
- Preserving the exact original file for archival
- There is genuinely no practical reason anymore
- You collect vintage codec formats as a hobby
- The file is already on a burned CD-R for nostalgia
Use MP4 when...
- Playing on phones, tablets, and smart TVs
- Adding to a media server like Plex or Jellyfin
- Sharing video files with anyone
- Uploading to YouTube or social platforms
- Any device or platform made after 2010

How to use
- Upload your DivX file. Drag and drop a .divx or .avi file onto the upload area, or click to browse. Both DivX and Xvid encoded AVI files are supported, up to 500 MB.
- Convert to MP4. Click Convert File. The DivX video stream is decoded and re-encoded as H.264, and the audio is transcoded to AAC, producing a standard MP4 container.
- Download your MP4. Save the converted MP4 and play it on any device. It works in every media player, on every operating system, and on every streaming platform. Uploaded files are deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Frequently asked questions
- Will the quality be as good as the original DivX?
- Yes. H.264 is a more efficient codec, so the MP4 output matches or slightly exceeds the visual quality of the DivX source at a similar or smaller file size. The conversion cannot improve resolution beyond what the original captured.
- Can I convert Xvid files too?
- Yes. Xvid is an open-source implementation of the same MPEG-4 Part 2 standard as DivX. The converter handles both DivX and Xvid encoded AVI files identically.
- What about multi-audio DivX files?
- If the AVI container has multiple audio tracks, the primary track is transcoded to AAC in the MP4 output. Additional audio tracks may not be carried over, as AVI has limited multi-track support.
- Are embedded subtitles preserved?
- AVI has very limited subtitle support. Most DivX files used external .srt or .sub files for subtitles rather than embedded tracks. Those external files will continue to work with the converted MP4.
- Is DivX to MP4 conversion free?
- Yes. Anyone can convert for free with no signup required. Anonymous users get a daily conversion allowance, registered accounts get higher limits, and Premium or Lifetime members get unlimited conversions.
